Will the U.S. labor market rise from ashes of a lost decade?

AthenaD's picture

CEO of Pacific Investment Management Co. (Pimco), Mohamed El-Erian, thinks that the last decade is a "lost decade" of unemployment for the labor market in the U.S., as outlined by Bloomberg. There is also another flaw El-Erian pointed out. That is that the economy in the country usually moves forward without any looking back at what has happened. The credit market won't even allow as many people as needed to get loans. He thinks a "new normal" in America is getting set in. San Antonio Refinery Fire - Known Safety Violations At Refinery

AthenaD's picture

Wednesday morning, a couple of hours after the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama exploded, a San Antonio refinery fire sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air. While it was being loaded with fuel, an 18 wheeler truck exploded which began the San Antonio refinery fire. The first explosion from the truck within the San Antonio refinery started a chain of explosions that lasted at least 45 minutes.

The San Antonio refinery is still burning

More than 100 firefighters and emergency responders were at the scene of the San Antonio refinery fire today. Any person who lives within a half mile of the explosion was evacuated. The private cash lenders and other financiers of AGE Refining, Inc., are set to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. The plume of smoke from the fire could possibly be seen from as far as 40 miles away. The fire will probably burn hot and for a long time considering the San Antonio refinery fire is fuel based. Outsourcing is hazardous

Terry White's picture

Outsourcing is hazardous.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has some serious lessons for outsourcing.

On the 20th April 2010 there was a gas leak at the BP deep oil drilling rig, which was followed immediately by a series of explosions, and we all know the subsequent pollution disaster that is still playing out – killing ocean life, and in consequence destroying fishing industries in the Gulf.
And that’s just the quick version. Barrack Obama has had to miss the opening of the FIFA world cup soccer to deal with the crisis.

The Wall Street Journal describes how immediately after the explosions, a crew member noticed that there had been no distress call, and she grabbed the radio and sent out a Mayday call. The Captain of the rig called her and berated her for doing so: “I didn’t give you authority to do that!”

Investing in getting closer to the customer

Craig Terblanche's picture

How do we differentiate our customer engagement and ensure profitability? There's an increasing trend of using applications that support customer interaction while delivering the product or service. Organisations are taking a closer look at their consolidated back-office infrastructures and harnessing the data they generate in order to better understand their interactions with their customers. The growing interest in business intelligence tools and online services such as SalesForce.com bare evidence of this trend. Read more

Welcome to my world. My aim is to use technology for the good of mankind and the planet, whilst making pots of money. I am also a "conspiracy theorist". The inverted commas signify that ideem most of this stuff to be true and not theory. Without getting into the "what is reality" debate, these is a lot of mean sh*t going on out there and we are being controlled by puppets. Of course the puppeteers have all the money, and therefore all the latest technology, but at least we can distribute news about what is going on "at the speed of thought".

Travel History On The Oregon Trail

ErickZ's picture

For many individuals, the game Oregon Trail is seared into their brains thanks to elementary school. Oregon Trail the game was originally developed in 1971 as a way to help students learn about traveling the Oregon Trail. To play the game, someone has to find the best personal loan rates, hunt, resupply, ford rivers, and usually make it to Oregon safely. Now, Oregon Trail is available to you, regardless how you want to travel it.

The game of Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail game might be almost 40 years old, but it is still an educational powerhouse. Oregon Trail is now available just about everywhere, in one of its five updated versions. Oregon Trail has also been parodied by everyone from Thule corporation to Fall Out Boy. The Virtual Apple's Oregon Trail site has the game accessible for play online, too.

Consider Africa when asking "What's the difference between Gen X and Gen Y and what's the opportunity"?

Craig Terblanche's picture

Generation Y, they say, are the true online natives. They have integrated technology into their everyday lives. They spend more time online (some would say fritter) than Generation X, watch more online video and SMS or text message more often. Technology forms a major part of their entertainment and the way they interact with their friends.

The psyche of Generation Y is what many companies are struggling to understand right now because it's key to their future revenue growth. Read more

It's Christmas in Africa too, if only

Craig Terblanche's picture

Africa needs infrastructure! If only we had  an infrastructure corridor from Cape Town to Cairo. The 2010 Fifa World Cup soccer event has given us a start. The road network in South Africa has been upgraded substantially, and wow, its looking awesome. Despite economic recession thousands of engineers, surveyers and civil construction workers of every discipline have beavered away for the past thirty six months or more to create a labyrinth of access to commerce.

If only we could extend this up Africa, beyond the road infrastructure to include ICT, Banking, Energy and Water. I've been following Christine Zhen-Wei Qiang's excellent work at the World Bank during 2009. A report entitled "A Spatial Econometric Analysis of Cell Phone Coverage in Sub-Sahara Africa" provides some insight to the challenge. Read more
